KESA participated in the Business and Peacebuilding Roundtable held on 18 June 2026, contributing to discussions on the role of businesses, SMEs, financial institutions and social enterprises in promoting peace and resilience across East Africa.

As part of the working group involved in the briefing and consultation process, KESA brought an economics and youth perspective to the conversation, highlighting the importance of inclusive economic opportunities, youth employment, core drivers of conflict and rationalism as key foundations for lasting peace.

Our contribution emphasised that peace and economic development are closely linked. Stable communities create an enabling environment for investment and enterprise growth, while inclusive economic systems help address inequalities and grievances that can contribute to conflict.

" Peace is a common good, hence it's utilised by all. Since businesses enjoy its utility, it is their mandate to ensure its positive endurance," Mark Gitau, the Secretary General said.

We also supported the need for stronger evidence on peace-supportive finance, SME development, climate resilience and the role of informal and youth-led enterprises in strengthening community resilience.

We appreciate the organisers and research team for convening this important dialogue and for producing a strong evidence-based consultation paper. Special thanks to Aston Business School, Strathmore Business School, Creative Alternative Now (CAN) and Interpeace, as well as Dr Syed Bahar, Dr William Murithi and Victoria Gichuki, and fellow working group colleagues whose insights enriched the discussions.

KESA remains committed to supporting policy dialogue, research and practical solutions that advance both economic development and sustainable peace in Kenya and the wider East African region.

Present were Mark Gitau and Benjamin Kimeu
