ASA-KU Gala Night and Swearing-In Ceremony
June 19, 2026
7:00 PM - 12:00 AM
Verona Hotel, Nairobi
KESA–ASA-KU relations are anchored in a partnership that reflects the value of interdisciplinary collaboration in student leadership and professional development.
Over the years, this relationship has continued to demonstrate the role both disciplines play in understanding markets, advancing financial accountability, and contributing to broader economic development.
As one of KESA's member, the ASA-KU has played an important role in broadening the association's reach and perspective by bringing strong accounting dimensions into KESA's wider community.
It was therefore a pleasure for KESA President Spencer Muhonja and OLS Michael Awimbo to join the ASA-KU fraternity on 19th June during its Gala Night and Swearing-In Ceremony held at Verona Hotel, Nairobi.
The occasion marked a significant leadership transition within the association, bringing together members, alumni, and partners to celebrate service, recognise achievement, and formally usher in a new administration.
Particular recognition is due to the outgoing President, Ruth Makena Munini, whose tenure stands among the most distinguished in the association's recent history.
As the first female President of ASA-KU, she demonstrated exceptional leadership that extended beyond the significance of the milestone itself. Her administration was marked by strong organisational performance, active engagement, and a commitment to strengthening the association's standing both within and beyond the university community.
In recognition of her contribution and continued engagement within KESA programmes, KESA presented her with the Best Delegate Award. An award she won at the 4th National Economics Summit in JKUAT.
The incoming leadership under Praise Karanja now assumes the responsibility of building upon this foundation and advancing the association's vision in the years ahead.
In her remarks, Spencer Muhonja noted that, "The future is shaped by those willing to accept responsibility for it. Leadership, therefore, is not merely a privilege entrusted for a season; it is a duty to leave people, organisations, and communities better than we found them."
We look forward to seeing ASA-KU continue to inspire its members to pursue excellence and contribute meaningfully to the growth, integrity, and future of the accounting profession in Kenya and beyond.

Business and Peacebuilding Working Group Roundtable
June 18, 2026
8:30 AM - 2:00 PM
Strathmore University, Madaraka, Nairobi West
KESA participated in the Business and Peacebuilding Roundtable held on 18 June 2026, contributing to discussions on the role of businesses, SMEs, financial institutions and social enterprises in promoting peace and resilience across East Africa.
As part of the working group involved in the briefing and consultation process, KESA brought an economics and youth perspective to the conversation, highlighting the importance of inclusive economic opportunities, youth employment, core drivers of conflict and rationalism as key foundations for lasting peace.
Our contribution emphasised that peace and economic development are closely linked. Stable communities create an enabling environment for investment and enterprise growth, while inclusive economic systems help address inequalities and grievances that can contribute to conflict.
" Peace is a common good, hence it's utilised by all. Since businesses enjoy its utility, it is their mandate to ensure its positive endurance," Mark Gitau, the Secretary General said.
We also supported the need for stronger evidence on peace-supportive finance, SME development, climate resilience and the role of informal and youth-led enterprises in strengthening community resilience.
We appreciate the organisers and research team for convening this important dialogue and for producing a strong evidence-based consultation paper. Special thanks to Aston Business School, Strathmore Business School, Creative Alternative Now (CAN) and Interpeace, as well as Dr Syed Bahar, Dr William Murithi and Victoria Gichuki, and fellow working group colleagues whose insights enriched the discussions.
KESA remains committed to supporting policy dialogue, research and practical solutions that advance both economic development and sustainable peace in Kenya and the wider East African region.
Present were Mark Gitau and Benjamin Kimeu

KESA & MMUESA Visit to International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI)
May 30, 2025
9:00 AM - 4:00 PM
Lower Kabete, Uthiru, Nairobi
On Friday, members of KESA and MMUESA had the opportunity to visit the International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) in Nairobi.
It was a meaningful and eye-opening experience that allowed us to see how economics connects with agriculture, livestock, and the everyday lives of people across the country.
ILRI is one of the world’s leading research institutions working to improve food security and reduce poverty through better use of livestock.
For many of us, it was our first time engaging so closely with professionals in livestock industry who are using research to improve food security.
We were welcomed by experts who generously shared their time and insights.
Their work reminded us that economics is a tool that can shape policies, strengthen communities, and drive change on the ground.
Throughout the day, we held conversations with Dr Kelvin Mashisia Shikuku, Mr Sirak Bahta, Ms Zoe Campbell, Marvin Wesonga and Dr Nils Teufel.
Each of them helped us understand how economic thinking is applied in livestock research and how those findings influence decisions at local and national levels.
Some of the key topics we explored included:
- The role of policy in livestock development
- How gender and social structures affect farming decisions
- Strengthening markets in dryland regions
- Improving value chains to support livelihoods
- The connection between research and national planning
We also looked at how data collected from fieldwork helps shape economic policies that are fair and effective.
It was encouraging to see how the voices and experiences of small communities are being used to inform long-term development strategies.
What stood out most was the spirit of the conversations. We were not just there to listen.
We were invited to ask questions, challenge ideas, and think critically.
Every session encouraged us to focus on the real impact of our work.
We are truly grateful to the ILRI team for the warm welcome and thoughtful discussions.
Their openness and commitment made the experience both informative and inspiring.
For KESA, this visit is part of a wider effort to give our members access to meaningful opportunities outside the classroom.
We believe that students grow best when they are exposed to real issues, real professionals, and real conversations.
This visit was a reminder of the important role young economists can play in shaping the future of our country.
We look forward to building more partnerships like this, and to creating even more opportunities where our members can learn, engage, and contribute.
Also present were KESA Secretary General Paul Muguro and OLS Benson Muiva

KESA Corporate Visit to IEA-Kenya
August 8, 2025
9:00 AM - 4:00 PM
ACK Garden House, Nairobi.
As part of our core objective to offer meaningful exposure to our members, we continues to organise corporate visits that provide budding economists with opportunities to engage with professionals, observe their day-to-day work, and understand how economics is applied in real-world policy environments.
Earlier today, a delegation of KESA members visited the Institute of Economic Affairs (IEA-Kenya) at their head office in ACK Garden House, Nairobi.
The delegation was led by Spencer Muhonja, KESA Deputy President, and Mark Gitau, Programme and Public Relations Director.
The visit brought together students from across the country, representing institutions including Chuka University, Kenyatta University, Embu University, University of Nairobi, Multimedia University, JKUAT, JOOUST, MKU, and Maseno University.
It was a unique and eye-opening experience, allowing students to explore the inner workings of a renowned public policy think tank.
The interactive session covered crucial areas aimed at bridging the gap between classroom learning and professional practice:
- Applying economic principles to real-world challenges
- Developing critical thinking and practical problem-solving skills
- Translating theory into actionable policy recommendations
- Preparing for the job market as the next generation of economists
In his keynote address, Mr Kwame Owino, CEO of IEA-Kenya, offered words of encouragement that deeply resonated with the our members,
“The economics that matters is the one that lives , not just the one in books. Creative thinking, problem-solving, and continuous learning are what set successful economists apart. Read widely, explore diverse literature, and work hard to create your niche.”
Speaking on behalf of the visiting delegation, KESA Deputy President Spencer Muhonja added:
“As young economists, our ambition must go beyond passing exams. We must be curious, courageous, and committed to shaping policies that respond to Kenya’s dynamic social and economic realities.”
This visit not only broadened our members' perspectives but also strengthened their understanding of the practical relevance of economics in shaping national policy and improving lives.
For many, it was a reminder that economics is not just a subject, it’s a tool for creating real change.
We extend our sincere gratitude to the entire team at IEA-Kenya for the warm reception and for taking the time to take us on how economic knowledge and tools are applied in policy analysis and advocacy, and to understand the role of a think tank in society.
At KESA, we remain committed to nurturing well-rounded economists who are informed, inspired, and ready to contribute meaningfully to Kenya’s and global development.

Strengthening Young Women's Participation in Policy
September 11, 2025
8:00 AM - 4:00 AM

Women carry lived experiences that shape families, communities, and economies.
Leaving them out of policy spaces means losing perspectives that matter in decision-making.
This is why KESA joined the Institute of Economic Affairs today for a ladies-only workshop, the second in a series of five.
The session is designed to capture youth perspectives and assess their literacy in policy, evidence use, and policy processes.
IEA has created this space for young women to reflect on how they engage with policy to influence change.

Participants included young women from diverse backgrounds as well as early-career professionals working in government, non-profits, and the private sector.

The 4th National Economics Summit Ends with a Strong Call to Action
May 12, 2026
9:00 AM - 5:00 PM
Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology
We have concluded our 4th National Economics Summit after days of thoughtful exchange, difficult questions, new perspectives, and a shared reflection on the direction of our economy and the future awaiting young people across the country.
This year’s conversations centred on reimagining innovative pathways for sustainable job creation and inclusive growth in a rapidly changing world.
From lecture halls to policy rooms, from industry perspectives to student-led discussions, one message remained consistent throughout the summit:
The future of economic leadership must become more inclusive, more practical, and more responsive to the realities facing young people today.
Economists, scholars, policymakers, private sector leaders, development partners, and students engaged openly on the opportunities for shaping modern economies.
There was recognition that sustainable growth cannot rest on aspiration alone. It must be supported by institutions that listen, partnerships that work, and policies that speak to the lived realities of citizens.
Since our first summit in 2023, KESA has continued to grow into a respected platform for economic thought, policy engagement, and youth leadership.
To all participants, speakers, guests, partners, and stakeholders who joined us, we extend our sincere appreciation. Your presence and willingness to engage strengthened the quality of the summit and the value of the conversations held.
We equally thank JKESA for hosting this year’s edition and for the commitment demonstrated in convening such an important national platform.
The discussions may have ended, but the responsibility that comes with them continues. The ideas shared, positions raised, and connections formed during the summit now carry an obligation for continued engagement, deeper collaboration, and practical action.

KESA at JKESA 2nd Annual Symposium
April 30, 2026
9:00 AM - 4:00 PM
Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology
We are strengthening our member institutions by supporting platforms that connect our members to practical economic thinking, build technical capacity, and deepen engagement with real policy issues.
KESA President Spencer Muhonja participated as a guest panellist at the JKESA 2nd Annual Symposium, held under the theme “Evaluating Kenya’s Digital Infrastructure and Its Implications on Youth Economic Participation.”
In her contribution, she challenged the view that opportunities are merely underutilised, stating that, “the question is not whether opportunities exist, but whether the structure of our economy can generate enough of them.”
She spoke to the role KESA continues to play in expanding access to meaningful engagement through initiatives such as PowerTalks, skill-based webinars, and a growing focus on research and publication.
These efforts are intended to move students beyond theoretical learning into spaces where they can build competence and participate more effectively in economic discussions.
The conversation pointed to a broader reality: addressing youth unemployment requires more than improving access to information. It calls for sustained economic expansion that can support job creation at the scale required.
KESA remains committed to supporting its member institutions through such engagements, while advancing policy advocacy that promotes predictable and stable economic conditions necessary for investment, job creation, and long-term growth.
